The big bad Burnside blues sound is back – and how! Robert Lee (RL) Burnside really was the most badass of bluesmen. From Mississippi, he lost father, brothers and uncles to murder, and was himself sentenced to the notorious Parchman Farm for killing a man in a craps game. Blues runs in the Burnside clan, and after feeling his way round different blues styles on previous albums, RL’s singing, drumming, guitaring grandson Cedric has honed it right down to a hard-hitting rawness verging on the brutality of gramps’ 1996 masterpiece “A Ass Pocket Of Whiskey”. The tender acoustic “There Is So Much” and the no less lovely electric “Call On Me” quietly stand out in a riff-heavy onslaught worthy of The White Stripes or early Led Zeppelin, all 12 tracks recorded in the Brooklyn home studio of his drummer/slide guitarist collaborator Brian Jay. You won’t hear tougher, nastier, more overdriven grooves this year. — Mat Snow
